Roxithromycin 150mg Tablets - Antibiotic

Dosage and Administration

Roxithromycin is taken orally.

Adults

Daily dose: 150mg, taken twice a day before meals. Do not take more than 10 days.

Children

Usual dose: 5 - 8mg / kg / day, divided into 2 times. By weight: 6 - 11kg: 25mg, 2 times a day; 12 - 23 kg: 50mg, 2 times a day; 24 - 40 kg: 100mg, twice daily. Do not use tablets for children under 4 years.

Severe hepatic impairment: The dose must be reduced by half the normal dose.

Kidney Failure: No need to change the usual dose.

SIDE EFFECTS

Unwanted effects (ADR)

Often, ADR> 1/100

Gastrointestinal: Nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, diarrhea.

Less common, 1/1000 <ADR <1/100

Hypersensitivity reactions: rash, urticaria, angioedema, purpura, bronchospasm, anaphylactic shock.

Central nervous system: dizziness, headache, paresthesia, decreased sense of smell and / or taste.

Increased antibiotic resistance, superinfection.

Rarely, ADR <1/1000

Liver: Elevated serum liver enzymes. Cholestatic hepatitis, pancreatitis symptoms (very rare).

ADR management tips

Treatment should be discontinued.

NOTE

Contraindications

Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to macrolide antibiotics.

Do not use roxithromycin concurrently with ergotamine-containing vasoconstrictors.

Do not use roxithromycin and other macrolides for patients taking terfenadine or astemisol because of the risk of life-threatening arrhythmia.

Contraindicated macrolide combination with cisapride, due to the risk of severe arrhythmia.

Careful

Take special care with roxithromycin for severe hepatic impairment.

Pregnancy period

Use only for pregnant women when needed, although there is no document that says roxithromycin causes birth defects.

Breastfeeding period

Roxithromycin excreted in milk with very low concentration.

Drug interactions

Co-administration of roxithromycin with one of the following drugs: astemisol, terfenadine, cisapride has the potential for serious cardiac dysrhythmias. Therefore, these drugs can not be combined for treatment.

There is no significant interaction with warfarin, carbamazepine, ciclosporin and oral contraceptives.

Moderate increase in theophylline or plasma concentrations of ciclosporin, but no change in the usual dose is required.

May increase unopyrolide concentration in serum.

Do not co-ordinate with bromocriptin because roxithromycin increases the concentration of this drug in plasma.
